Homes and Communities Agency 'on target'

The Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) has said it is on track to hit its goal of constructing 55,625 residences this year.

According to the body, the period between April 1st and September 30th saw 20,177 units completed and work commencing on 14,136 more.

This represented 36 per cent of the completion total and 24 per cent of the 57,815 units the body pledged to start.

HCA chairman Sir Bob Kerslake stated: "Judging by our current performance, I expect to achieve our end of year housing targets."

He added that the number of both starts and completions will increase "disproportionately" over the next six months, with schemes operating under the Kickstart and Local Authority New Build programmes coming on stream.

The building of new and affordable homes is vital for Britain, housing charity Shelter commented recently.

While campaigning for unused existing residences to be brought back into use, it said further construction is also a key part of the solution.
