Honour for carpet importer

Honour for carpet importer

A carpet importer who sold 27,123 sq m of Nepalese carpet into the German marketplace has been honoured by the government of the Himalayan country.

Kreiger GmbH managing director Thomas Roetter was recognised by prime minister Madhav Kumar Nepal with the 2009 Export Excellence Award at a ceremony in the capital city Kathmandu.

Mr Roetter said that Nepalese carpets are among the best in the world and as long as this remains the case, his company will seek to increase the volumes of them being exported to Germany.

Mr Kumar Nepal used the occasion to restate his government's commitment to restoring the fortunes of the country's carpet industry, commenting that the recommendations of a task force set up to examine the issue will be implemented this year.

Neighbouring India has reported a rise in its carpet exports, with textiles minister Dayanidhi Maran stating at the India Carpet Expo in Delhi this week that there was an 8.5 per cent rise in overseas trade in January compared to December.

He said this was due to the end of the recession in Europe and the US.
