Indian carpet exports 'on the rise'

Indian carpet exports 'on the rise'

India's carpet export business has recovered its strength, with an 8.5 per cent rise in overseas trade in January, it has been stated.

Textiles minister Dayanidhi Maran, speaking at the India Carpet Expo in Delhi, said the pick-up in such business is due to the end of the recession in Europe and the US.

Most of India's carpet experts go to these two markets, he noted.

Summing up the recent fortunes of the industry, he commented: "We were negative 15 per cent, now we are showing five to seven per cent growth. Overall, month-on-month, we can say we are positive but overall we are still negative."

While India looks forward to enjoying better export success, carpet industry officials in neighbouring Pakistan were critical earlier this month about the level of support they have received for efforts to boost sales in Europe.

Chairman of the Pakistan Carpet Manufacturers and Exporters Association Pervaiz Hanif said only 20 out of 35 exporters were able to attend January's Domotex fair in Germany due to a lack of help from government officials and the country's German embassy.
