Laminate flooring is one of the features of a home that has had a complete makeover carried out by family members while the occupier was away.
Virginia Bird was away from her home in Stockton, California, for 44 days while her family carried out the work, Recordnet.com reports.
As well as new laminated hardwood flooring, there were fresh carpets, the installation of which caused a problem because those coming to fit them arrived three hours late.
But despite this and various other headaches - varying from bad weather to paint spillages - the family completed the re-vamp in time for 78-year-old Ms Bird's return.
New shower fittings, doorknobs, air vents, hinges and throw rugs were also added.
Hardwood laminate floors are a good option for those looking to revamp a home, real estate investor Mike Heayn told the Santa Monica Daily Press earlier this month.
He stated: "Many hardwood laminate floors are extremely durable and have warranties that last ten years or more."
