There are some positive aspects to the proposed Conservative Party policy of having decisions on the building of homes made on a more localised level, it has been stated.
Head of communications at the Home Builders Federation (HBF) Steve Turner said of the plans: "There are a lot of benefits and positives in terms of what they are saying."
However, he added, there will need to be some central control to make sure that local authorities do not "abdicate" their responsibilities in the area of housebuilding.
Mr Turner noted that all political parties are talking about more decisions being taken at a local level, meaning that this could be an issue for whoever is in office after the next election.
Opposition to the construction of new homes has eased among the public in recent months, according to a poll by new homes company Smartnewhomes.com.
It found 55 per cent of respondents disagreed with the notion that their area had seen too much development in the past.
