Major redevelopment may boost carpet orders

A large-scale redevelopment of former military accommodation in Aldershot may lead to a large number of new carpet orders.

The government has announced via the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) that it is seeking developers to take on land currently owned by Defence Estates and put it to new use.

It is looking for 4,500 homes to be built on the 148 hectare site, along with facilities such as shops, schools, leisure sites and community centres.

Head of area at the HCA Kevin Bourner said: "The winning bidder will have to achieve high standards of sustainability, design and ensure new affordable homes and community facilities are part of their plans."

New build sales have been rising rapidly in some places, with London seeing a 214 per cent year-on-year rise in 2009, according to figures published this week by Knight Frank.

Manager of new build agency Smartnewhomes.com Dave Bexon said this was not surprising as such homes have been "consistently undervalued" in recent times.
