More loans needed to finance building work, expert states
An increase in lending will allow demand for home extensions to be met, an expert has argued.

Director at the National Home Improvement Council Andrew Leech said that difficulty in obtaining finance is contributing to a decline in the number of people having such work done.

But he suggested that the situation could be temporary and the UK building industry may be set to benefit from a rise in the number of structural changes that could be made.

"Now is a really good time to carry out this sort of work because building costs are lower than usual and there are some pretty keen prices coming through from builders," Mr Leech remarked.

It comes after Sainsbury's revealed that 13 per cent of British homeowners are planning major changes to their property over the next year.

Mr Leech went on to say that although the use of a builder will mean there is insurance covering the construction work, homeowners need to inform their own insurer before structural work is carried out.
