'Moss' carpet licence awarded

'Moss' carpet licence awarded

The license to produce a carpet that feels like moss underfoot has been awarded to German carpet maker Kymo.

Bayer MaterialScience (BMS), which has developed the technology to produce the carpet, licensed the Karlsruhe-based company to manufacture the Pure Moss viscoelastic foam carpet range, European Plastics News reports.

Kymo showcased the products at the IMM international furnishing show in Cologne last month.

Manfred Naujoks of BMS said the material is designed to be partly - but not fully - compressed.

"Since the underfoot area yields without taking large parts of the surrounding area with it, the foam surrounds the foot and gives it a firm grip, which results in a completely new feeling," he remarked.

A more traditional carpet with less favourable associations to come out of Germany was found last week in Yorkshire.

The Green Howards Regiment Museum in Richmond, North Yorkshire, found a sample piece said to have been cut from the floor of Adolf Hitler's bunker by a member of the regiment who was in Berlin at the end of the war in Europe.

It was discovered in an envelope in the archive room as it was being cleared for decorating.
