Nepal 'to establish carpet village'

The Nepalese carpet industry is awaiting the green light from the country's government to set up a carpet village dedicated to the industry.

Such a centre was recently suggested after a task force reported on the country's industry, which has seen the value of earnings by the sector plunge from $15 billion (£9.7 billion) to $6 billion in recent years, the Himalayan Times reports.

Commenting on the state of the industry, Kabindra Nath Thakur, president of the Nepali Carpet Exporters Association, said there were problems with rising raw material costs and a lack of skilled labour.

"There are no new recruitments and training programmes to develop skilled manpower, apart from [the] lack of raw materials," he stated.

Another national carpet industry seeking to enhance its fortunes is that in Iran.

A team of Iranian artists recently completed a 500 sq m Persian carpet to be sent to the United Arab Emirates as part of a campaign to publicise the products, Press TV reported last week.

Further carpets will be sent to other countries as part of the campaign.
