Pakistan's carpet experts 'to be worth $200m'

Pakistan's carpet experts will be worth $200 million (£126 million) in the current fiscal year, it has been predicted.

Chairman of the Pakistan Carpet Manufacturers and Exporters Association Pervaiz Hanif said that the value of carpets sold overseas would rise from last year's $145 million, but claimed that better support from the country's government could improve this further.

He criticised both the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan and the country's embassy in Germany for a lack of support for firms displaying their wares at the Domotex Fair.

Mr Hanif argued that this led to only 20 of the 35 exporters being able to attend the fair, at which one of the makers won the Best Traditional Nomadic Design Superior award.

Neighbouring India has enjoyed exceptional success in Germany as the largest exporter of carpets to the country, Iranian news agency Irna reported last month.

It stated that of the 2.2 million tonnes of carpet imported to the country in the first ten months of 2009, half of it was Indian.
