Planning permission granted for library

Planning permission granted for library

A major flooring order may be in the offing as Birmingham City Council has granted planning permission for a new central library for the city.

The £193 million structure will replace the existing building, with the facility linked with the Birmingham repertory Theatre and expected to attract 10,000 people through its doors each day, double the number of the current library.

Leader of the city council Mike Whitby said: "This is excellent news for Birmingham and I look forward to enjoying the new library and Repertory Theatre when they open in 2013."

The building will have more space than the current library and may therefore require a large amount of carpet, hardwood or other material to cover its floors.

As well as the library, the city council's cabinet has rubber stamped plans to change planning laws to aid the redevelopment and modernisation of Sutton Coldfield, the Birmingham Post reports.

This could see more demand for flooring as new buildings are constructed, although plans may not go ahead until after the recession ends.
