The artistry and style of Syrian carpet makers has been praised by a teacher of handicrafts in one of the regions that produces the items.
Maha al-Ahmed, a tutor in a school in the Lattakia area, told Global Arab Network that the craftsmen of the area are very skilled in the art because textiles are used for many purposes.
The news provider noted that hand-made artistry remains a key feature of the designs of the carpets, despite the increase in mechanisation in the industry.
Wool is used in many of the carpets, along with silk, natural linen and cotton, it added.
Another country where traditional ways of making carpets are still going strong despite the increase in machine-made items is Morrocco, the China Post reported last week.
It stated that locally-made carpet, like the designs available in the town of Rabat, offer a greater quality than those rolling off factory production lines.
