Promising carpet recycling scheme
Successful carpet recycling schemes are still in their infancy, with large numbers of carpets still being sent off to the landfill.
However, one US city is bringing in a revolutionary scheme to prevent old carpets being dumped by homeowners within the city.
The used carpet will be separated in to plastic, carpet backing and usable carpet so that each element can be simply recycled.
People living in the city will find that they save money by using the recycling scheme rather than a landfill, and this is expected to provide a sizeable incentive to use the service.
Carpets make up a noticeable percentage of landfill waste so recycling through this scheme will also have a number of environmental benefits.
Plus, if similar schemes become widely used, carpet will finally be an eco friendly flooring option for homes and commercial premises.
The Napa Recycling and Waste Service will transfer the discarded carpets to a plant where the recycling will actually take place.
Carpet stores in the area are backing the project by installing carpet disposal units at the showrooms so that there is a local disposal, which people will be alerted to when they are looking for new floors.
