Public sector spending 'boosts UK building industry'
19th August 2009
According to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors' (Rics) construction market survey, more surveyors in the non-housing public sector building industry reported a rise in workloads than a fall in the first quarter of the year.
The study showed that work was at its most positive level since the end of 2007 and a filtering through of spending was cited as a major factor.
Rics chief economist Simon Rubinsohn remarked: "State spending is providing some much needed support for the construction industry with public sector works reaping the benefits."
Tentative signs that public sector housing is seeing an improvement were also observed by the organisation.
Housing minister John Healey recently announced that £1 billion is to be invested in stalled development projects so that work can get underway as soon as possible.
