Sustainable flooring made from reclaimed wood is one of the best ways of being green, according to experts in the industry.
The National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA), a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to educating the wider world about the benefits of wood flooring, has suggested that reclaimed wood - from another source such as a barn or old army barracks - is not only eco-friendly but provides homes with a very individual feel.
According to the NWFA, the history of every piece of wood contributes to this ambiance as each individual floorboard will come from a different place and time and will be unique in colouring and character.
Every bit of reclaimed wood used for flooring is treated by hand in order to minimise environmental distress - nails and other foreign objects are removed by hand prior to the wood being carefully milled to make the floorboards.
US firm Pioneer Millworks recently added an antique engineered flooring design to its range of green products.
