An American based carpet company has unveiled a technological breakthrough in the way it recycles carpets.

Massive amounts of carpet is diverted to landfills or incinerators every year and responsible companies within the industry are taking the initiative to find alternative ways to dispose of carpets in an eco friendly way.

While previous recycling schemes have focused on what secondary uses the waste carpet could have InterfaceFLOR say that they have produced a system which separates carpet tiles.

By splitting individual carpet tiles in to the two individual components of backing and yarn each can then be reused to make new carpet tiles.

Without these recycling opportunities thousands of tonnes of carpet are dumped in landfills and incinerators at great cost to the environment.

In a Waste Management World article the Senior Vice President of Operations at InterfaceFLOR said: “This is a waste of valuable resources and has an unacceptable impact on the environment.

“With capacity diminishing rapidly and landfill tax rising annually, it is clear that this option is both environmentally and financially unsustainable.”

InterfaceFLOR have committed to cutting waste sent to landfills and this new system looks to be the next step in eco-friendly carpet waste management.
