Rug competition for athletes finds a winner

An exciting competition by flooring manufacturer Shaw Industries has found a winner from over 70 entrants, all of who were athletes from the Special Olympics.

The flooring company sponsored the Special Olympics Georgia 2011 and invited all of the athletes to submit design ideas for a rug to closer link the sponsor with the competition.

Sharrod Vaugh was announced as the overall winner of the creative contest and his design was transformed in to an area rug which he was awarded with as his prize.

A second copy of the rug has also been manufactured and will be a part of a display commemorating the achievements of all of the athletes at the base of the Georgia Special Olympics.

Mr Vaughn, a 20-year-old autistic athlete, has been interested in art and design for many years and is actually a practicing artist alongside competing in athletics.

The rug design was inspired by the city of New York but both the Georgia Special Olympics and Shaw Industries are based in Georgia.

There are further links between the flooring firm and the competition as three rugs have been designed to support the event and these can be purchased through the Special Olympics website.

Shaw Industries is a carpet manufacturer with business links worldwide, although they also supply hardwood and laminate flooring.
