The practice of rug hooking is on the increase, according to an enthusiast for the floor product manufacturing technique.

Karl Gimber told the Montgomery News: "It's a very popular thing today. There's a great resurgence of rug hooking."

Mr Gimber and his wife Mary Jo recently led a workshop on the technique at the Mennonite Heritage Centre in Harleysville, Pennsylvania.

The practice is a traditional one that dates back 150 years and can also be used to make other items, such as toys and pillows.

Director at the centre Sarah Wolfgang Heebner noted that the rugs are often made using recycled wool items, such as old coats, dresses and other garments.

A celebration of the art of rug hooking is to be held in the town of Rockport, Maine, next month.

From Saturday May 1st, the Farnsworth Art Museum will be showing an exhibition entitled Rug Hooking in Maine and Beyond, which will run until December, the Bangor Daily News reports.
