Rugs 'essential for the home'

Rugs have many qualities making them essential for the home, it has been suggested.

Writing for Terry's Fabrics, expert Helen Green noted the value of the items in terms of their aesthetics, as a safety aid on harder floors made of wood or lino and as a means of reducing sound.

All of these may be good reasons for having them in homes with children, with Ms Green noting the safety aspect will also apply to homes with pets or old people in.

Reflecting on the aesthetic aspect, she said: "Think how a brightly coloured pattern rug will help to liven up the children's playroom or how a deep pile in sensual red will highlight a romantic bedroom."

Householders looking for children's rugs can choose from a range of themed items aimed at children, with some of them having themed pink for girls and blue for boys.

These include animals, ladybirds, farmyard, zoo and car themes.
