Success for carpet recycling scheme

Support for flooring recycling schemes appears to be growing as customers face the impact that sending a used floor to the landfill will have.

These results were discovered by Carpet Recycling UK, which announced the results of their survey at a flooring event last month.

Almost three quarters of those surveyed said that they would use a take-back scheme if one was available, even if there was a charge for the service.

This is positive news for the flooring industry which has been taking steps to make all types of flooring more environmentally friendly.

Wood flooring is now sourced from environmentally friendly forests so it is made from a sustainable product but carpet was more difficult to adapt.

Fortunately many people have committed to creating an effective recycling scheme for carpets, the only potential issue was whether consumers would use these schemes or stick with landfills.

From over 450 Carpet Foundation members CRUK found that 74% would be willing to pay for their carpet waste to be removed.

The figures will hopefully persuade more retailers to sign up for the scheme which is hoping to divert 50,000 tonnes of carpet waste from landfills and in to recycling centres.
