Successful scheme to recycle carpet waste
In the past three years the amount of carpet waste being sent to landfill sites has been dramatically slashed thanks to a not for profit organisation.
Carpet Recycling UK has diverted 2,760 tonnes of carpet wastage which is then used for anything from plastic compounding and energy recovery as well as surface mixtures.
The diversion rate is 53% of the total carpet waste which dwarfs the average diversion rate for the carpet industry as a whole as this was merely 6% in 2009.
CRUK co-ordinator, Jane Gardner, said: “These figures are a tremendous achievement, showing that UK carpet manufacturers who are CRUK members greatly surpassed the sector’s average landfill diversion rate.”
The company was founded to challenge the boundaries to recycling carpets and minimise the amount of waste which is sent to landfills.
Through this method the organisation is making carpets a more environmentally friendly choice and, although the company cannot offer carpet recycling services directly the aim is to provide enough recycling opportunities across the country.
The not for profit membership organisation continues to research and develop new ways of recycling and reusing carpet to further cut the amount of waste which is taken to landfills.
