'Surge in business' for Lebanese carpets

There has been a major boom in new business in the Lebanese carpet sector across the Middle East and north Africa, it has been stated.

According to the organisers of the Domotex Middle East trade fair, the country has emerged as a fast-growing market for exhibitors, with construction projects there being worth $1.8 billion [£1.16 billion] in 2009, Al Bawaba reports.

This in turn is driving demand for carpets and other floor coverings, the news provider noted, with these making up between 15 per cent and 20 per cent of the total value of the building schemes.

As well as featuring both hand-made and machine-manufactured carpets, floor coverings to be featured at Domotex will include wood flooring and laminate flooring.

Ottoman carpet is a popular product in the region, according to two brothers who put on a display of historic examples of the art in Qatar.

Owners of Samovar Carpet & Antiques Alaa and Saraj Hindi held the show at the Pearl Qatar in Doha, the Gulf Times reported last week.
