Sustainable flooring claims 'should be carefully considered'

Homeowners should not read too much into manufacturers' claims regarding sustainable flooring, it has been suggested.

Experts at the UK Flooring Direct blog explained that products may not be environmentally-friendly even if they are advertised as such and a range of factors need to be taken into consideration.

Householders were urged to think about recycling, as well as greenhouse emissions and energy consumption, before making a decision on green flooring.

According to the specialists, the most sustainable flooring is that which is created without depleting resources - making cork flooring as well as bamboo ideal choices.

"Bamboo grows pretty quickly and can be harvested with minimal effect on the environment," they said, adding that cork is obtained from the barks of trees and does not take long to grow back.

Cork flooring was recently recommended to readers of the San Fernando Valley Sun by Rose Bennett Gilbert, who suggested that it is a particularly good choice for the kitchen.
