Sustainable flooring 'good for allergies'

Sustainable flooring is one element that can help contribute to an allergy-proof home, it has been suggested.

In an article on the subject, the Chicago Tribune notes that using materials that have an absence of toxins is the best way to achieve such a result.

One expert, Tim Ngabtak of Good Karma Construction, explained that his preferred method included using cork flooring, or bamboo.

His own penchant for recycled materials also involves recycled carpets made using recycled bottle tops.

President of Molidor Custom Builders Tom Molidor told the paper he liked to use hardwood flooring, with his own construction projects informed by the fact that his wife was allergic to gases given off by some chemicals used in household items.

Vinyl flooring can also help with allergies, as noted in the US reality TV programme Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, the Herald Bulletin reported recently.

The house had such a floor fitted to curb the mould growth that was worsening the symptoms of one of the children living there, who has a disease made worse by exposure to spores.
