Sustainable flooring is playing a part in an environmental initiative at the University of North Texas in Denton.
As part of the educational establishment's ongoing commitment to enhancing its green credentials, it is aiming to secure Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (Leed) accreditation for one of its new buildings, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Construction is set to start on its new football stadium in the early part of 2010 and the seat of learning hopes to earn Gold Leed certification from the US Green Building Council for the structure.
Aside from sustainable flooring, recycled materials will be used in the building's seating and paint, while wind turbines and solar panels are also due to be installed.
Last week, Jaye Baillie, chairman and chief executive of the Ocala/Marion County Chamber of Commerce told Ocala.com of the benefits of cork flooring, after the body moved into new accommodation that featured the material.
