The cost of sustainable flooring

With more and more people opting to take time to consider the environment and recycle used goods, it is unsurprising that sustainable flooring is becoming more of a priority.

Kim Gavin, editor of Floor Covering Weekly, said: “We underestimated just how ingrained sustainability had become throughout the entire supply chain.”

Environmentally friendly flooring is easy to find with plenty of manufacturers and suppliers doing their bit to encourage the use of green products.

And the recession hasn’t dampened anyone’s good intentions, as Kim said: “Even though business was bad and getting worse, the flooring industry embraced the principles of sustainability because it was the right thing to do and because it is good business.”

One type of flooring which can boast excellent green credentials is cork flooring as this product is made from just the bark on the tree rather than the wood itself.

This means that the outer layer of the bark can be removed without harming the tree, which can be left to restore itself.

Cork floors are also fantastic for anyone looking for a comfortable floor as it is easy to stand on even for long periods of time.

This is why many people choose cork for the kitchen, where people often congregate or stay standing for long periods during food preparation.
