UK homes to receive 'energy makeovers'

The government has unveiled a proposal for seven million homes in the UK to receive home energy makeovers.

It forms part of the Low Carbon Transition Plan, which intends to achieve a 34 per cent cut in 1990 emissions levels by 2020.

With a 21 per cent reduction having already been delivered, the move is aimed at saving households money as well as creating jobs.

Business secretary Peter Mandelson explained that the UK's low-carbon economy is already the sixth-largest in the world, adding: "The government is outlining how its support for the economy will ensure our businesses and our workforce continue to lead the way."

An intention for 1.5 million homes to produce their own clean energy by 2020 was also outlined in the plan.

The government recently published its Building Britain's Future report, which revealed that £1.5 billion is to be invested in the creation of affordable housing over the next two years.
