UK house prices 'continue to rise'

The UK building industry could be set to receive a boost following the news that prices have risen this month.

According to figures from Nationwide, July marks the third consecutive month in which the average value has increased, the figure now standing at £158,871.

That represents 1.3 per cent growth compared to June, a month which itself saw a one per cent rise.

Chief economist at the building society Martin Gahbauer explained that even though values are more than six per cent below the level of one year ago, this is a marked improvement on the 9.3 per cent year-on-year decline recorded in June.

"There is now a reasonable chance that prices could end the year slightly higher than where they started. Only a few months ago, such an outcome would have appeared unthinkable," he said.

Meanwhile, Timothy Lambert of property investment consultancy Ducalian has suggested that now is an ideal time to be buying a home.
