Underlay emissions to be reduced
The EU Solvent Emissions Directive has pledged to lower the emissions from a range of products and industries, and underlay looks set to be part of the move.
In order to achieve more environmentally friendly products the Volatile Organic Compound Emissions (VOC Emissions) are to be monitored to improve the environmentally friendly qualities of products and processes.
This move has been embraced by underlay manufacturer Interfloor to boost the green credentials of the company.
Interfloor has invested in a gas analyser to allow in-house testing of products in an effort to stay on top of the game when it comes to VOC emissions.
These emissions are gases which are emitted from various every day liquids or solids, including paints and varnishes.
The level of VOC emissions from a product like underlay is unlikely to be particularly high compared to those in paints, however the decision to try and lower it is commended.
Whether the technology will prove a success in this context is yet to be seen but if it is this could have an impact on all carpet underlay manufacturers.
Underlays for floors are an essential component for many flooring options so this move will potentially have a large influence across the underlay industry.
It will also mean that sustainable flooring options can be complemented by environmentally sound flooring underlay.
