Used carpet turned into insulation blocks
Old carpet wool has been given a new life thanks to a company based in the Lake District.

Second Nature - which is located in Dacre near Penrith - has been using the material to make an insulation material called Edenbloc, as an alternative to fibreboard made from wood and polystyrene.

The development has been partly financed with a £10,000 grant from the Lake District Sustainable Development Fund.

Co-ordinator of the fund Clive Wickham said that insulation is the best way of saving energy, adding: "The first product of its kind in the UK, it reuses redundant carpet wool and is 100 per cent natural."

The material comes from wool that is left over from the carpet making process.

A wool carpet making firm has been making its own contribution to a greener world by using totally natural dyes.

Wools of New Zealand has sourced its red dyes from Dutch firm Rubia Pigmenta, which come from the Madder plant, enabling them to attain the Global Organic Textile Standard, ecotextile.com reported last week.
