Vinyl floor features in Avatar

The blockbuster film Avatar has more than just 3D special effects, flying mountains and large blue creatures, it has been revealed, with a black vinyl floor also being included.

Art director Kim Sinclair told the New Zealand Herald said that James Cameron was pleased with most parts of the set, which was designed in Wellington.

However, he added, the exception was the floor, with the Titanic director insisting on having a shiny black vinyl one included.

Mr Sinclair said that the crew was up late working on replacing their original floor choice with the vinyl one.

Cameron's choice may suggest that vinyl has notable qualities that he was keen to have, despite so much of the film's elements being the result of cutting edge digital technology.

Other recent instances of a black vinyl floor making an unheralded appearance include the World Cup draw in Cape Town in November.

Football's World governing body Fifa revealed that this would be the surface used for the floor of the convention centre in the city, where the likes of David Beckham and Charlize Theron helped pick out the balls to decide the group stage fixtures.
