Vinyl flooring recycling scheme launched

A scheme to recycle vinyl flooring has been launched by two manufacturers of the product.

UK-based Altro and Polyflor are joining forces in the Recofloor plan run by Axion Consulting, which involves taking offcuts from when vinyl flooring is laid and then re-using this as new flooring, Recycling Portal reports.

The firms will also pick up uplifted and end-of-life material, which will be used in the making of road barriers and traffic cones.

Axion Consulting's Recofloor project manager Jane Gardener said: "We are very pleased that Altro and Polyflor, as founder members of Recofloor, have made this huge commitment to the sustainability of vinyl flooring."

Polyflor stated that 25 per cent of its vinyl flooring products is recycled material.

Vinyl's durability has made it a popular material for companies looking to refurbish their offices rather than move to new ones during the recession, it was claimed yesterday.

Mark Halstead, the chief executive of vinyl flooring company James Halstead, told Crain's Manchester Business this week that this was the main reason for the company posting record profits in the year to June 30th.
