A new programme to collect and recycle vinyl flooring in Britain and Ireland is underway.
Six firms, who are each members of the Independent Flooring Distributors Association, have started picking up the material at designated sites in Sheffield, Leeds, Hull, Hampshire, Kent and Dublin under the Recofloor scheme, plastic and Rubber Weekly reports.
Commenting on the programme, Recofloor project manager Jane Gardner said the feedback on the scheme so far has been "positive".
She noted that distributors have reported this as being welcomed by customers, "who not only save on disposal costs but can also demonstrate their commitment to reducing environmental impact by recycling old and unwanted vinyl flooring".
Manufacturers Altro and Polyflor turn off-cuts of vinyl into new flooring, while material too worn to be recycled this way is used to make traffic cones.
Earlier this week, vinyl was tipped by Risk Collective as a suitable flooring surface for those practicing yoga.
