Vinyl flooring is among the materials that can now be recycled due to the development of new technology, it has been noted.
Reporting on the SURFACES 2010 expo in Las Vegas, Eco Home Magazine noted that the material is among several where new techniques have been found to re-use old material, which in addition to vinyl includes carpets and old bottles.
The magazine commented: "This burgeoning green movement among these manufacturers is clearly a response to customer demand, particularly among professionals."
It mentioned manufacturer Mannington as one example of a firm making progress with vinyl flooring, stating that it now makes its products using 25 per cent of its material from recycled old vinyl, whereas previously firms only aimed to reach five per cent.
Last month, North Tyneside Council revealed that it has managed to increase recycling of vinyl flooring.
Sita UK, the agency used by the authority to provide recycling services, installed new collection points at a depot to collect the material, MRW reported.
