Warning over carpet strike
21st January 2010
Steve Martin, the operations manager at the InterfaceFLOR plant in Craigavon, Armagh, said plans by 85 workers to down tools in a dispute over pay and conditions were "both premature and extraordinarily confrontational".
Trade union Unite has backed the action after the company agreed a one-off payment of £400 to employees in England without this happening in Northern Ireland.
Mr Martin claimed this was simply because the firm had yet to have any discussions with the union in Ulster.
He argued that in the present economic climate any action "will seriously affect the company's ability to protect jobs at Craigavon".
One UK carpet firm enjoying better fortunes at present is Kidderminster firm Brintons, who recently won a £3.4 million contract to make carpets for Delhi's new airport terminal, which has been built ahead of the city's hosting of the Commonwealth Games later this year.
