While many companies find things are increasingly tough with the recession McKay Flooring has taken it as an opportunity to come up with more innovative flooring options.

Currently generating global interest for the company is the new whisky barrel flooring, which is already prompting enquiries from as far afield as Malaysia, Russia and the US.

Richard McKay, company director at McKay Flooring, “We’re never short of ideas around here, however, whisky barrel flooring has really captured a lot of people’s imagination.”

The variety of different types of whisky barrel flooring means that each floor even has its own story to tell and there have been over 300 inquiries from across the globe.

Whether the barrel has been used to store sherry in Spain or bourbon in America, each has a unique history which other flooring will find difficult to compete with.

Not only is the new product a great option for style and sheer originality, it is also environmentally friendly.

The barrels which are being used come from the Scotch whisky industry, where they previously had to dispose of the wood in landfills.

Mr McKay said: ““Many people wonder if the flooring retains the aroma of fine malt whisky.

“It’s a good question and probably depends on how vivid your imagination is. Certainly, when you press a board to your nose, you get a very pleasant smell.”

The family-owned firm expects a lower turnover this year as a result of the recession but their new product could have what it takes to get the company back on top.
