Wimbledon rolls out green carpet for queen
25th June 2010
It was the first time that the monarch had been to the annual championships since 1977 and the carpet had been prepared with the occasion in mind, with green being one of two colours - along with purple - that make up the club's livery.
The carpet was laid out next to Court 14, although it was in the royal box on centre court that the queen sat to watch the tennis, as the last British survivor in the men's singles tournament Andy Murray produced a winning performance in a straight-sets victory over Jarkko Nieminen.
Wimbledon is not the only sporting event going on at present that has seen the introduction of a new green carpet.
Mark and Karen Thompson from Oldham in Greater Manchester turned their living room into a mock football stadium for the World Cup, with a green carpet covered in imitation pitch markings.
