Wool carpet is a more affordable option than used to be the case, an expert has noted.
In a feature on sustainable flooring choices, the Times Colonist in Canada quoted interiors expert Greg Holtz as stating that wool "used to be referred to as the rich man's carpet".
However, he added, this is no longer true, remarking: "But the price of wool has been stable, compared to spikes on prices of carpets based on petro-chemicals."
The latter type increases in cost when oil prices rise, Mr Holtz observed, noting that a wool carpet now is no more expensive than an average nylon carpet.
As well as the lower cost, the paper noted that wool carpets come from a sustainable and renewable material.
One firm expecting to benefit from the popularity of wool carpet is New Zealand firm Elders.
Earlier this month, the firm displayed its wares before US retailers at the Global Partners Annual International Design Guild retailers conference and chairman Stu Chapman was quoted by Fibre2fashion saying that the response had been favourable.
Many American high street stores will now stock the carpets, he revealed.
