A ban on beating carpets in Blackpool is among a range of arcane and little-known laws set to be abolished under new government regulations.

Local authorities will be offered new powers under forthcoming legislation announced by local government minister Grant Shapps to dispose of old by-laws and the government noted the seaside town's ban may be among them.

The law as it stands prohibits the beating of carpets or the hanging of towels on the Lancashire resort's promenade.

Other odd laws that could go include the frying of fish in Gloucester and the drying of clothes in parks in Kent.

Those living in the town who are keen to buy a cheap carpet may be relieved by the news, but Blackpool is not the only place where this form of carpet maintenance is outlawed.

It is also illegal to beat a carpet in a street in the Metropolitan Police district after 08:00.

The replacement floor coverings were one element of the £85,000 project that has seen the Rousler in Bromsgrove High Street transformed, with the new title of the Grapevine to go with its transformed interior, the Bromsgrove Advertiser reports.

As well as the carpets, there is new wallpaper, more roof seating and a new beach hut-style roof terrace.

Pub manager Gary Abbott remarked: "The feedback from customers has just been fantastic and the opening night went really well."

He added that the venue no longer shows sport on TV and aims to provide a "comfortable, traditional pub environment".

Many people are likely to drop into a hostelry with a new carpet, according to Daily Telegraph writer Emily O' Hare noting that a number of restaurants have been opened for just a few weeks in London before closing.

She said this included one in Selfridges featuring a white carpet to go with white sparkling lights.
