Over the last few months we’ve covered a series of maintenance topics in this section of the Inspiration Centre, but in light of UK Flooring Direct’s latest introduction we thought it right to share 7 of our top tips on carpet care.
Fear not. Whether it’s red wine, pet hair or another flooring foe, we’ve got you covered with this concise, to-the-point feature. We’re here to prove that carpet care is a breeze when the basics are done right, helping to keep your chosen design looking at its best, whether you plump for Rhapsody Clotted Cream, Crown Royal Silver or an altogether different style!
1. Vacuum regularly
It sounds simple but we’re all guilty of neglecting the vacuum from time to time. In general, once a week should suffice, although high traffic areas such as hallways and stairs will require a going over more regularly. This is to ensure debris is caught early and not ground deep into the fibre.
2. Vacuum from all angles
Vacuum both vertically and horizontally to ensure the fibre is attacked from all angles. If you vacuum in the same direction week in week out, there is a chance part of the fibre is not being cleaned, and this could cause discolouration down the line. Vacuuming from alternate angles is also a good technique to pick up stray pet hair that has become embedded.
3. Use the nozzle attachment
The nozzle attachment is there for a reason! Use this cheeky chap to get in the tight spaces where the main vacuum will not reach. Forget ‘out of sight, out of mind’. If you choose to rearrange furniture at some point in the future, it would be a shame to reveal dirty areas of carpet that have not been cared for.

4. Include entrance matting
Stop the threat at source through the inclusion of sufficient entrance matting. If guests have a place to clean their shoes, there’s less chance of debris being ground into your sparkling new UK Flooring Direct carpet. Again, a simple point, but one worth thinking about.
5. Act fast
When disaster strikes, you must act fast. The longer you leave that spillage, the more likely it is to stain, and you could then require a professional carpet cleaning service – a costly business! As soon as the liquid is down, reach for the paper towels and attempt to absorb. This said, be careful with your technique…
6. Blot don’t rub
The natural instinct is to rub a stain with vigour, in an attempt to pull it from the fibre. In reality, this will have the exact opposite effect, and can definitely make things worse. Try to blot rather than rub, a simple paper towel or dishcloth doing the job. Repeat as many times as necessary.
7. White wine is a myth
Do not attack red wine with white! This will only amplify the problem. In most cases, tap water is the best solution, although there are carpet-approved cleaners for more stubborn marks. Fairy liquid is also a no-go, as it will leave a layer of residue and will only hide your stain for a matter of hours. Do your research to avoid being stung here, WoolSafe’s Carpet Cleaning App a good reference point.
