In this Get the Look feature we consider what makes for the perfect welcoming hallway. This is an often neglected living space, yet the first that guests come into contact with. Everybody wants their hallway to look inviting, and although aesthetics are an important factor, the demands each season can bring on an entrance must also be considered to ensure lasting good looks.
Whether it’s flooring or furniture, layout or paintwork, Your Home of Inspiration is here to guide you through your welcoming hallway makeover.
STEP 1: Light Source
Can light source really be that important? Well, yes it can. This is a crucial factor if your hallway is to display those sought after cosy credentials. If you have an abundant natural light source, then you are already one step ahead of the game. We understand this can’t always be the case, so it’s important that you help yourself in any way possible.
Simple efforts such as replacing that dim light bulb or adding a floor lamp will go a long way. The choices below from M&S, B&Q and Pottery Barn respectively could be what your space is crying out for.
There’s nothing worse than entering a dark, dingy hallway, and this will set the tone for the whole house! Paint and flooring shades can also have a bearing, lighter colours helping to reflect and create an uplifting feel, perfect for when you step in out of the cold.
STEP 2: Layout
There is only so much you can do when it comes to a hallway’s layout, few having the space required to make sweeping changes. This said, it is a real bug bear of ours when items are left scattered across the hallway area, so take a look around - a de-cluttering job could be order of the day!
Let’s scoop up those shoes, scarves and hats, and if you can fit in some storage (a chest for example) then so much the better. It’s these small touches that can make all the difference when it comes to first impressions.
STEP 3: Flooring
Hallways will experience their fair share of heavy traffic and muddy footsteps, and for this reason it is crucial that flooring choice is spot on to combat such threats. However, there is scope to use almost all of the material offerings found at UK Flooring Direct.
Solid wood is great at achieving a totally natural look, the real deal that does nothing but encourage the welcoming feel. Likewise, engineered wood achieves this aesthetic but with easier installation, click together joints meaning DIY fitting is an option.
If on a stricter budget, laminate could be the flooring for you, bringing a wood or tile design with the added advantage of simple care. There is also the option of vinyl, the optimum time-saver thanks to easy wipe finish that is ideal for combatting moisture and dirt marks.
The latter two are particularly apt choices for the hallway thanks to their maintenance benefits, helping to keep this space as clean and inviting as possible, and at all times.
Regardless of the flooring type chosen, remember to opt for warming shades to really help set the tone (there are plenty of these available in UK Flooring Direct’s wood look collections, whatever the material). Also think about narrower plank widths if space is at a premium, this helping to give the impression of a larger hallway.
STEP 4: Final Touches
First and foremost, don’t forget to include a trusty doormat. They may not come hand in hand with the look you’re trying to achieve, but dirt and stain marks are the last thing you want in your hallway. Trendy options are available if you shop around!
There are also some sleek-looking coat and shoe racks out there (the below from The Cotswold Company) so again it pays to take time shopping around, and a stair runner could be a smart addition if the stairway is in view.
Explore online and get some inspiration, mirrors & light shades just a couple of the accessories that could take this welcoming look to the next level. These areas are often ignored when it comes to design and implementing themes, but there is no reason why you can’t put an impressive stamp on your hallway entrance. Finally, we’d avoid the ‘home sweet home’ print – how cliché!
