The Cottagecore Trend

With Cottagecore set to take over the top spot in interior design this year, it’s time to get up to speed with how you can cleverly embrace this cosy, country way of styling within your own home.

Easily recognisable for its love of all things homely, minimalist, and quintessentially British, this trend has been coined ‘grandma-chic’ and we’re certainly on board.

Introducing natural elements is one of the many ways to incorporate this trend into any room or throughout your home. Perfectly paired with sustainable style, dainty details, and the combination of real or dried foliage make for the epitome of Cottagecore.

Emulating these four key elements is exactly what Lucy of @gatehouseinthewoods has done in her living / dining room space to create the ultimate English country feel. Through her purposeful use of natural materials; from the choice of real wood flooring and furniture to rattan woven baskets and exposed brick work. A feeling of warmth certainly radiates throughout – and that’s not just down to the log burner!

Another way Lucy cleverly adds natural beauty into her home is through the beautiful placement of greenery, which is renowned for its fresh and reviving properties.

Using simple industrial light fittings complement the traditional choice of furniture effortlessly, whilst adding in certain patterns, such as tartan, really enhance the typical country feeling. It’s certainly not difficult to see why Lucy fell head over heels for this trend – we have too!

We caught up with Lucy to find out how she achieved this look, including her project tips and favourite finds…

How would you describe your style?

“Modern vintage. We love old vintage and antique pieces, mixed with crisp clean décor.”

What inspired your project?

“We moved into our home in June 2019 and have been renovating it ever since. We live in a gate house, surrounded by woodland and we wanted to revive its beautiful old features that had been lost over the years.”

Best find in the room?

“Finding the old chimney and installing a wood burner. It's the centrepiece of the room.”

Proudest moment of the project?

“It honestly was having the flooring laid! This was the moment that the house finally became a home.”

What surprised you most about the process?

“How everything takes much longer than first expected! Renovating is a long process, we have achieved a lot since moving to the property, but there's still lots to be done. Our next project is renovating the basement.”

How did you decide which floor to use?

“We knew we wanted real wood flooring, so we ordered samples from a range of companies. We wanted the flooring to be a light colour, as it's quite a dark house and it would make the rooms feel bigger. There really wasn't any competition with the other samples that we had received, so it was an obvious choice for us.”
