Following great feedback to last week’s Hints & Tips, we’re treating you to a fabulous second part on rugs and the practical considerations you should be privy to.
This time, we take a look at one of the biggest dilemmas of all: which material will suit your home best. Read on and find out, as the benefits of wool, polyester and polypropylene are dissected.
Q. I’m looking for the real deal: a natural, cushioning feel underfoot that will equally stand the test of time.
A. You’d be after wool, the 100% natural option offering an effect that simply cannot be replicated in man made fibres. Wool has been the go-to rug and carpet choice in the UK for centuries; soft, true to nature, stunning in appearance and a durable buy to boot, these are items that will take pride of place in your home for years to come - a real investment purchase. Manufacturing advances mean that man made fibres are now a solid bet, but there’s nothing quite like the lustre of wool, with its look and feel bringing luxury to any room.
Q. I love great design, but a silky soft feel is just as important to me, something that will feel great even to the bare foot.
A. When it comes to super soft choice, polyester is hard to beat. Combined with a striking aesthetic, introduced through a silky, shimmering lustre, polyester rugs are known for their comforting credentials, a treat for your feet when placed upon wood or laminate boards. A great addition to snug spaces such as bedrooms and living rooms, thicker pile polyester rugs really do heighten a feel of luxury, with exceptional colour clarity ensuring you’re spoilt for choice in the design department, too.
Q. Cleaning properties are key as I live in a family home where slips and spills are commonplace, however I don’t want to sacrifice looks.
A. Again, we turn our attentions to the UK Flooring Direct man made fibre stable, this time polypropylene ticking all the relevant boxes. Polypropylene has come on leaps and bounds in the carpet sector, and these advances have been passed on to rugs which means you can now gain a beautiful easy-clean option ready for the rigours of everyday family life. If you know spillages are a real possibility, we’d nudge you in the direction of polypropylene for a low maintenance solution, although this is not to say that looks will suffer as a result.
