The Education Centre: How to Maintain Oiled Flooring?

After-Installation Care

All oiled floors should be thoroughly cleaned right after installation and as part of a regular cleaning regime. The surface will then be more hardwearing and easier to clean and maintain in the future. This is because the recommended soap used to clean oiled floors coats the surface with an invisible film, providing additional protection and making the floor more resistant to dirt.

Simply use a brush or vacuum cleaner for normal cleaning to remove surface debris. In order to achieve the best cleaning possible, use an oiled flooring soap cleaner. This highly concentrated soap is for cleaning and maintenance of oiled wooden surfaces, suitable for flooring, furniture, kitchen surfaces, and all indoor wood.

Investing in a daily maintenance kit for your oiled flooring such as the WOCA Care and Protect Kit for white floors or the WOCA Care and Protect Kit for natural floors is a good idea for long term protection. For the day-to-day maintenance, a daily cleaner will do the job.

How to clean:

If the floor has been neglected and/or becomes very dirty, it should be cleaned using one of our specialist floor cleaning kits, developed for deep penetration of the wood fibre. Natural wood floors require regular care and attention and use of the proper care agents. Proper care of floorboards means the floor stays beautiful and has a longer life.

How to apply oiled floor cleaners:

Use either the WOCA Wood Stain Remover or WOCA Intensive Wood Cleaner for particularly stubborn stains before cleaning and maintaining with Oil Refreshing Soap, how to apply these is as follows:

  • Shake thoroughly before use to make sure the pigments are mixed well

  • Mix the Oil Refreshing Soap with lukewarm water:

  • - For traditionally oiled floors: 1:20 (250 ml soap into 5 L of water)
    - For UV-oiled and oil-waxed floors: 1:40 (125 ml soap into 5 L of water)
    - The mixture ratio can vary depending on wear

  • Wipe the floor lengthwise with the soap water – it’s recommended to clean an area of approx. 10 m2 at a time

  • Leave wood to dry for approx. 2 hours before use

  • If a light shine is wanted, polish the dry floor with a white pad

Top tip: don’t wipe the floor with pure water after using the soap as the protective oils will be removed!

How to refresh your oiled floor:

Use a flooring refresher once or twice a year, depending on the level of dirt, to restore and protect if the floor has become dull and tired looking. It will help in everyday care, reinforces the floors resistance to dirt, and gives your floor a new lease of life.

Instructions for oiled flooring refresher use:

How to apply oiled floor cleaners:

  • Firstly, clean the soiled surface with one of our oiled floor cleaning kits and leave to dry thoroughly for 4 to 8 hours

  • Apply a thin layer of Easy Clean Oiled Flooring Refresher with a diffuser or a cloth and then rub into the wood until a smooth surface is revealed

  • Make sure you leave no excess oil on the surface

  • Within approx. 4 hours the floor may be walked on, though the full hardening time is 24 hours. During which time the floor must not be cleaned with water and should be used sparingly and with care.
