Recycled carpet a feature of green building

Recycled carpet a feature of green building

A university building in the US is adopting recycling technology as it bids to become the institution's first structure to gain a green building accreditation status.

The 1950s-style prairie house at the University of Wyoming, which houses its Haub School and Ruckelshaus Institute of Environment and Natural Resources, is being revamped using green materials.

Recycled carpet is one of the items included in the renovation, which is intended to establish Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, a green standard conveyed by the US Green Building Council.

The university is aiming to gain LEED certification at silver level - the second highest possible behind gold.

Known as Bim Kendall House, the building will also use cork and laminate - both of which are common flooring materials - as well as non-toxic paints and water-saving devices.

Another example of carpeting being recycled is occurring in the UK, where old flooring from the National Hockey Stadium has been removed and given to local sports clubs while the venue is demolished and replaced by new Network Rail offices.
