Oiled Wood Flooring

For wood with a natural, matte look which feels warm and luxurious under the feet, take a look at our oiled wood flooring range. This finish never fails to bring out the grain, and its beautifully rustic look only improves with age.

What makes oiled finishes look so good is that they work from the inside out. The oils are absorbed deep into the wood rather than settling on top like a varnish, so the surface retains its natural look and feel.

The oils offer protection, but they also enhance the wood's best qualities, producing rich, deep colours that highlight the grain.

What Is an Oiled Finish?

Instead of applying a protective coating on top of wood and losing its natural texture, oiled finishes protect from within. The oils penetrate pores in the wood and are absorbed into the fibres, keeping other liquids and dirt out.

Besides protection, this approach has several benefits. The wood's natural look and texture are preserved, and areas that start to show signs of wear can be spot treated by reapplying oil. There's no need to sand and refinish every time.

Oiled wood is a little higher maintenance than lacquered wood and doesn't hold up against spills quite so well, but it can add a lot of warmth and character to your rooms.

Choosing Real Wood Oiled Flooring

Both solid and engineered wood can be oiled. Solid wood is cut from one piece of hardwood and provides a premium look and feel, but it needs a stable climate. Engineered only has a hardwood surface and is more versatile.

When it comes to colour, a natural appearance is popular for oiled floors. However, you can use satin oils to add a subtle sheen, or coloured ones to create a new look entirely.

Oiled woods are best suited to spaces where they're unlikely to get wet, like living rooms and bedrooms. But if you're careful and quick to dry up spills, they can work well in kitchens too.

Maintenance & After-care of Oiled Floors

When cleaning oiled wood flooring, use dedicated oiled-floor cleaners and soft mops or cloths. Harsh chemicals and hard scrubbing can strip away the finish. Cleaning regularly will keep your floor looking its best.

Over time, the oils will naturally dry out, so make sure you refresh the wood with a drop of maintenance oil once a year or so. This nourishes the wood, deepens its colours and brings the grain out again.
